LANDMARK DEVELOPMENTS

In the history of HCHW, a number of landmark developments, events and incidents have taken place. Some of them have been captured over here.

PARTNERSHIP WITH NOVIB
HCHW has spread its wings and horizons and slowly got acclaim for its vision, commitment, consistency as well as dedicated service rendered for the cause of children on streets. Thus, in 1996. NOVIB, the Netherlands based Donor Organization has come forward to support the efforts of HCHW. Thus, the partnership started with NOVIB.

We respect, honour and value this partnership that has been instrumental in growth and development of HCHW. This partnership has strengthened the mission of the organization and provided means to translate its mission into practice.

Infact, the partnership with NOVIB helped HCHW in strengthening its credibility and getting a structure. HCHW has received recognition from government and non government resources as an NGO with commitment and professional expertise. The partnership of NOVIB that spanned over a period of seven years started in 1995 under the New Project Initiative and continued as same till 1997.

The two year period of 1998-99 can be descried as transitional phase that enabled HCHW to take stock of the past achievements and evolve a long term perspective plan for wider impact and outreach in its efforts towards making Hyderabad a “Children Friendly City”.

The next phase of this partnership spanning from 2000-2003 has infact, enabled HCHW to address the other dimensions to the problem of street children by attacking the root cause of Poverty; controlling the incidences of migration of children from rural to urban areas; fighting against stigma associated with street children and other relevant socioeconomic concerns.

This phase had enabled HCHW to venture out the new areas such as Networking with other NGO's, Advocacy and Lobbying. It has also helped HCHW to grow as a Regional Resource Center.

PARTNERSHIP WITH WERELDKINDEREN
The idea of Second Home took shape in 1997, which was then popularly known as Home II. True to its name this shelter home serves as a second home as it is an exclusive home for school going children seeking formal education in regular schools. It is basically started to concentrate the children free from the influences of street elements.

Thanks to the timely support of Wereldkinderen, the Netherlands based Donor Organization for the program of Second Home. The main aim of this program was to mainstreaming the children and nullifying the stigma attached to them on streets. Wereldkinderen is supporting the maintenance of 100 children.

PARTNERSHIP WITH CRY
Recently, CRY – Child Relief and You has recognized the work of HCHW in the field of child development and today HCHW is the Regional Resource Organization for Andhra Pradesh for carrying forward the new initiative of CRY entitled Quality Institutional Care and Alternatives for Children (QIC and AC) in Andhra Pradesh.

CONSULTATION SERVICES FOR JUVENILE JUSTICE ACT
HCHW has been instrumental in advocating the concept of Shelter Home to such an extent over years that it has been now integrated into Juvenile Justice System. HCHW has rendered consultancy in framing and designing rules for implementation of Juvenile Justice Act 2000 for the Government of Andhra Pradesh within particular reference to institutional care.

PERSPECTIVE DEVELOPMENT
A workshop was organized in 1999 entitled “Linkages in Working with Street Children – A Long Term Perspective”. This workshop has enabled HCHW to evolve a long-term program of rehabilitation for street and working children with a wider coverage and effective packages. The pleasure lies in the fact that the newly evolved project is comprehensive and multi-dimensional in nature covering the aspects of rehabilitation, development and prevention. The workshop has also envisaged a model of networking through which some of the successful interventions can be replicated in other areas.

In addition to it, HCHW has organized a four-day “State Level Workshop on Street Children Towards Perspective Development” from 31st May to 3rd June 2000. As an outcome of this workshop, the participating NGO's have felt and expressed that NGO's should come forward and create a common platform in order to share and learn from each other experiences in the form of a State Level Network. Further, it was unanimously entrusted upon HCHW to be the anchor to this network. Thus the network was formed as a joint effort towards making Andhra Pradesh a child friendly state.

HCHW has been striving to render the service with vivid vision and foresightedness its approach and functioning. In the year 2000. HCHW has purchases 1000 square yards of open land in Attapur, Mehdipatnam for construction of a combined building for Second Home, Vocational Rehabilitation Center and a School as part of its long term plan.
